Since many of us make New Year resolutions for fitness, family life or our career, we have decided to come up with some “plumbing resolutions” to help homeowners avoid some major plumbing problems throughout the year. If homeowners make a commitment to do some basic plumbing maintenance and minor adjustments to prolong the lifespan of their plumbing system throughout their homes, this could possibly prevent major plumbing issues before they even arise.

Leaky Faucets

Make a commitment to fix leaky faucets immediately. That slow, annoying drip wastes water, reduces the life of your faucets, and can cause troublesome stains on the surfaces of your sinks. Most leaks require a simple fix, without the need to replace the entire faucet. If your faucets are old and worn, there are lots of low-cost options for new faucets at your local hardware stores or online. Changing out those old leaky faucets can add a brand new look to your bathroom and save you money on wasted water.

Running Toilets

We have all been guilty of doing the toilet handle jiggle when the water won’t stop running after flushing the toilet. In addition to a high water bill form a toilet that is constantly running, the last thing any homeowner would want is to have a running toilet get to the point where it’s stuck running, overflows the bowl and floods the bathroom. Sometimes a running toilet is a one-time deal, but if a homeowner has to tell guests to jiggle the toilet handle after a flush because it’s been an ongoing problem, then it’s time to have a professional plumber take a look at the underlying issue.

Sump Pump

The sump pump is a piece of equipment that takes groundwater out of the basement or crawl space. Since water can build up along the foundation during heavy rains, the sump pump moves water away from the house. If the sump pump fails, water can get into the foundation of the walls and cause mold mildew, and even flooding of your basement. It is recommended that your sump pump should be tested at least every spring and fall, and then every couple of months throughout the rest of the year. Try to remember to test your sump pump periodically throughout the year so you don’t find out that it has failed during a heavy spell of rain.

Slow Drains

If you can hear noises coming from your drain, or you are usually standing in a pool of water while you shower because your drains are slow, try to have your drains professionally cleaned. The quick fix drain cleaning products and home remedies may give you some relief for a week or two, but slow drains are usually a sign of a restriction in the drain path that could cause more plumbing issues later down the road. If you have a slow drain in your home, get a professional plumber to come and clear the main drain line. They can also run a camera down the line and do a video inspection to make sure the line is clear. This can prevent the dreaded emergency during a holiday, wee hours of the morning, or when the in-laws are in town, that the sink, shower, bathtub or toilet is clogged.

Making these small commitments to your home’s plumbing systems throughout the year can help prevent bigger issues. Having a yearly plumbing inspection of your home’s entire plumbing system is an even better plan, to ensure that you are not faced with a major plumbing issue this year.
