Exterior Christmas Lighting Ideas for a Winter Wonderland

As the Christmas Season approaches and we focus on decking the halls with boughs of holly, we sometimes forget the exterior of our homes. With some strategic exterior lighting, you can easily transform your backyard into a beautiful, magical paradise that will be sure to impress neighbors, guests, and passersby. If you’ve always focused on the roofline and shrubs, but you would like to add some more sophisticated exterior lighting touches, here are a few ideas.

Light up Walkways

With the holidays fast approaching, many guests are sure to be visiting your home than at other times of the year. A great functional lighting idea is to keep walkways, driveways and the path to the house brightly lit. Consider adding lights to a concrete wall that reflect upward or downward. Exterior solar lights can also be added at intermittent points at the base of rows of trees or shrubs.

Emphasize Archways and Columns

If your home has archways or columns, an innovative idea includes hanging Christmas decorations such as wreaths, large outdoor bells, bows or Moravian stars in the design feature. Exterior lights can be placed directly across from the decorations and shine directly on the design feature to highlight them at night. If you don’t have arches or columns, but you would like to hand a decorative ornament on your windows or door, you can also apply this exterior lighting technique.

Highlight an Unlit Yard Feature

If you have a yard feature such a fountain, bird feature or statue, consider leaving the feature unlit and add an exterior light at the back of the feature that points upwards. The feature will glow in the subtle ambiance of the reflection of the light and create a stunning backdrop effect that will be the talk of the town. If you do not have a yard feature – a large seasonal themed yard structure such as a cross, Christmas Tree or Nativity Scene can be highlighted instead.
